Abstract:
When is a group smarter than an individual? This depends on the intricate details of interactions within the group, to the point that actually a group can become stupider than an individual. So how the optimal conditions that maximize the collective intelligence can be achieved and put to a good use? In particular, what are the potentials of crowdsourcing - an emergent social phenomenon assisted by social media - to collectively solve problems and generate ideas or solutions? Upon going over several interesting examples of crowdsourcing usage in modern science, we will present our own contributions to the field, which are inspired by the logic of complex systems.
