Long-lasting desynchronizing effect of coordinated reset stimulation
Abstract:
We discuss coordinated reset stimulation, a control technique designed with the methods of nonlinear dynamics for effective desynchronization of neuronal populations. It exploits dynamical self-organization principles and establishes a mild, but effective control and can be used for suppression of pathological neuronal synchronization characteristic for several neurological disorders like Parkinson's disease or tinnitus. In a clinical study with deep brain stimulation we show that - in accordance with theoretical predictions - the method is effective and has long-lasting therapeutic effects from the electrophysiological and clinical standpoint.
