Chaotic lasers: Synchronization, communication and ulta-fast random number generators
Prof. Dr. Ido Kanter (Bar-Ilan University, Israel)
Chaos synchronization is a counter-intuitive phenomenon. On one hand, a
chaotic system is unpredictable. Two chaotic systems, starting from almost
identical initial states, end in completely different trajectories. On the
other hand, two identical chaotic units which are coupled to each other can
synchronize to a common chaotic trajectory. The system is still chaotic, but
after a transient the two chaotic trajectories are locked to each other.
This phenomenon is observed in the synchronization of two chaotic
semiconductor lasers and has the following potential applications:
(a) broadband communication devices
(b) novel secure communication channels
(c) ultra-high speed physical random number generation
(d) similarity between chaotic lasers and neuronal systems
The emergent bridges between the chaotic lasers, communication, cryptography
and brain science open the horizon for new important discoveries among the
four disciplines.
